Despite only being part of the Vertech Group for a few weeks, Yuval Barker is already meshing well with the onshore inspection team.
I interviewed him via email to find out what makes him tick.
Tell us about yourself and what you will be doing at Vertech Group.
I’m 36, born in New Zealand and raised in Israel. I grew up in a Kibbutz in Israel, which is a socialist community settlement that is mainly based on farming as a source of income. It is a unique way of life, and it’s not for everyone. I will be working in the Vertech onshore department as a Graduate Engineer.
Is this your first job/internship utilising your degree? If not, what experience did you have before coming to Vertech?
Yes, this is my first job utilising my degree, so I’m excited to put my skills to good use and see where it will take me.
What is one skill you learnt during your studies that has been vital as a professional?
Communication skills, both interpersonal and written. There are many back-and-forth emails and desk-side deliberations, so being comfortable from the beginning with approaching and being approached makes settling in easier.
Do you have any hobbies or activities you like to do on weekends?
I like to go to the gym and keep fit, mainly by doing strength-based weightlifting exercises. I also enjoy cooking. I have been good at cooking since I worked as a chef for more than ten years, until this major career change.
What is your dream vacation?
I don’t have a dream vacation but would like to visit and experience as many different places as possible. See different cultures and sceneries while kicking back and relaxing on the beach when possible.
What is your all-time favourite film and why?
I am a big Marvel fan, so most Marvel movies are up there in favourites. But I can’t pick over the others as an all-time favourite.
What is your favourite food/dream meal?
At the moment, my favourite food to eat out is Ramen. As it is popular among Perth residents, we are spoilt for choice regarding Ramen shops.
It’s great to have you onboard Yuval!
